Care guide
Natural fabric lasts if you wash it gently and dry it out of the sun. Here is what we do with our own pieces.
Washed cotton
Cold machine wash, gentle cycle, similar colours. Dry in shade. Warm iron on the reverse. Deep colours like burgundy and dark brown should be washed separately the first two times.
Linen and cotton blend
Cold gentle wash, no wringing. Shake it out and hang while damp so creases fall. Press while slightly damp for the cleanest finish.
Soft cotton and muslin
Hand wash or gentle machine wash in a mesh bag. These are lighter weaves and snag more easily. Low heat iron.
Rayon blends
Hand wash cold, or dry clean. Do not wring. Dry flat in shade. Rayon is weaker when wet, so support the garment rather than hanging it dripping.
Silk
Hand wash cold with a mild detergent, or dry clean. Do not soak or wring. Roll in a towel to lift out water, then dry flat in shade. Iron on low heat on the reverse, with a cloth between the iron and the silk.
Handwork and trims
Pintucks: press along the fold with the iron point, never across the rows.
Crochet panels: wash in a mesh bag so the trim does not catch on zips.
Smocked and elasticated waists: do not iron directly on the elastic.
Covered buttons: close them before washing so they do not pull the placket.
Things that shorten a garment's life
Bleach and strong stain removers on coloured cotton.
Drying in direct sun, which fades dyes quickly here.
Tumble drying on high heat, which shrinks cotton and sets creases.
Hanging heavy wet skirts, which pulls the waistband out of shape.
Storing
Hang dresses, blouses and pleated skirts. Fold knitted and cropped pieces so the shoulders do not stretch. Keep everything dry and give cotton some air, since damp cupboards mark pale fabric.
